With one of the most distinctive set of hunting weapons found in the animal kingdom, the bear is a triumph of predator evolution complete with a bone-crushing bite and specially-designed teeth that enable it to live off almost anything. But the bear does not start life at the top of the predator pecking order. The size of a small dog, the world’s first bear must seek refuge in trees from larger carnivores until climate changes force the bear to leave its tree perch 14 million years ago. When the Ice Age claims mammals like the woolly mammoth and sabre-toothed tiger, bears explode in size, splitting into several different bear lines and adapting to wildly varying habitats. In India, the sloth bear develops a long tongue and leaner snout perfect for creating a suction to catch ants, termites and other insects. The brown bear – able to run as fast as a horse – develops sharp reflexes to overpower the larger giant short faced bear. Trapped in the Arctic, a population of brown bears transforms into the polar bear with translucent hair that gives it a white appearance. As polar bears and brown grizzly bears are pushed together by shrinking habitats, could a new species begin to evolve before our very eyes?
